@Steve:

I feel like you are doing nothing but yelling!? It's pretty rude to just post a bunch of ranting to a blog that was only sharing some information. If you don't like VirtualBox, then don't use it. This is simple out-of-the-box virtualization software. There are other solutions for larger projects that make it easier, however, when it comes to installing VM* Tools, it's the same process VirtualBox or VMWare.

Next time, post something useful; I don't take well to rants when you cannot support and/or contribute to the community.

Simplicity is the key word ! Unreasonable rearengment menu options in vbox! So why we do not have in menu install Guest OS/from iso file or /cd/dvd rom or /import virtual applience (from what so ever source/media) ??? Instead we have strange messed up options from which you do not conclude logical step of what to do next and to do it right ! What i have learn so far that nothing and absolute nothing is easy in virtualization of os'es ! And all of you praise it to the heaven ! First complicated it and then writing a few 100 pages of manual howtos ! Its like zombi gui ! I alredy know what are logical steps what needs to be done, but menus are somehow strange rearangment of options that leads to wrong conclusions of use of options ! The latest version of vbox !

Abject,

I never had to update the xorg.conf, and from what I've seen as of late, xorg.conf isn't used as much as it used to, especially in Ubuntu installs.I also haven't had any rampant mouse/keyboard problems with VBox, especially after install the VirtualBox Guest Additions.

Just install the kernel headers and you should be good to go. I haven't tried this directly on Debian, as I don't use Debian anymore, however, I have tried it on Ubuntu (Debian-based, but no longer Debian specific), and I've tried it on RHEL-based systems, and have had no problems.

Um... Don't you also need to edit
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
? I've seen several posts that say you do, to cure the (now, for me, at least) rampant mouse and keyboard problems on Linux guests (either GUI or RDP). So far, I haven't found the magic xorg.conf config that makes any of these problems go away.

On Debian, at least, you also need your kernels headers. the easiest way to get them is to install module-assistant and the run

# m-a prepare

Some Debian users have reported that the latest version of guest-additions are even worse, and suggest using the previous version's guest additions (available at vbox's website's download area).
